Space Technology Boosts the Next Generation of Ground Control Stations and SATCOM Terminals
EOSOL leverages ESA’s Discovery funds and Intellectual Property (IP) licensing initiatives to bring advanced space communications technology to Earth.
EOSOL, a leading Spanish engineering company, has successfully transferred cutting-edge space technology to Earth applications, thanks to the support of the European Space Agency (ESA) through its call for the commercial and technical maturation of ESA inventions available via the OSIP platform..Within its Aerospace unit, EOSOL, specialized in the development of antennas and radio frequency components, collaborated closely with ESA to create a novel, compact "mode extractor" initially designed for space missions. This groundbreaking innovation has now been adapted for terrestrial ground control stations (GCS) and SATCOM terminals, significantly improving performance while reducing the size and production costs of ground antennas.
The project not only achieved a major technical milestone but also opened a new business line for EOSOL in compact feeders for both ground stations and Fly Away terminals. "We are proud to have been given the opportunity to further develop one of the patents that the Agency has in its portfolio, through ESA's Discovery Programme, which fosters collaboration to carry out pioneering research in the space field. We are convinced that these initiatives will accelerate the progress of our industry and bring us closer to a future where satellite communications are more efficient and accessible to all," said the EOSOL team.
Beyond supporting innovation projects like EOSOL's, ESA plays a key role in helping companies develop, protect, and maximize the value of intellectual property generated through space research. Through its dedicated IP programs, ESA ensures that space-born technologies are used by ESA Member States’ industries, enhancing the competitiveness of its industry and generating societal benefits. In addition, ESA provides companies with access to its extensive patent portfolio, offering non-exclusive free of charge license agreementnts for applications within the ESA's Member States industry for space applications while for for non-space use, licences are negotiated under favourable conditions for the same industry. This proactive policy fosters the wider adoption of space innovations, creating new market opportunities and accelerating technological progress.
EOSOL’s achievement exemplifies how ESA initiatives like Discovery via the Open Channel available OSIP and its Intellectual Property and Licensing programs bridge space innovation and terrestrial applications, strengthening European industry leadership while delivering tangible benefits to society.
